Overview
Refr Sports is developing the infrastructure through which sports officials are assigned, managed and paid. Its platform connects assignors, sports organisations and referees across scheduling, communication and payments, bringing interdependent responsibilities into a shared digital environment.
Wynand’s relationship with Refr extends back to its early commercial development. Through embedded marketing and partnership leadership, our involvement has connected decisions about market positioning with the programmes, relationships and digital presence supporting customer acquisition.
That relationship has continued through Refr’s $2 million seed round and its progression towards $1 million in annual recurring revenue.
Establishing a position in referee management
Refr’s commercial proposition serves distinct audiences. Assignors evaluate how software supports scheduling and the management of officials. Sports organisations consider coverage, administrative demands and payment oversight. Referees experience the platform through assignments, availability and earnings.
Positioning Refr required a coherent account of that shared value, expressed in terms relevant to each audience. Our role has centred on connecting product capabilities with the reasons customers adopt the platform, supported by audience-specific communications and comparisons with established alternatives.
This positioning has informed Refr’s digital presence, sales materials and product marketing, giving individual features a commercial context within the wider referee management proposition.
Building acquisition around adoption
Our marketing involvement extends across search, editorial content, paid campaigns and email communications. These programmes address both organisations evaluating Refr and officials engaging with its platform.
Acquisition communications reflect the different decisions involved in adoption. An assignor considering a platform change needs to understand its implications for existing schedules, officials and payment arrangements. Referee-facing communications place greater emphasis on access to assignments, availability and earnings.
Our continuing involvement connects those considerations with campaign development and sales communications, maintaining a consistent account of Refr’s value across initial discovery and customer evaluation.
Connecting product development with market communication
As Refr introduces new capabilities, product marketing translates technical development into relevance for customers. Instant cashouts, availability management and game reporting each address different aspects of an official’s or assignor’s experience.
Our role connects release communications with Refr’s broader positioning, explaining how individual developments contribute to the management of assignments, payments and customer relationships.
Continuing coordination with leadership brings product priorities and customer feedback into marketing decisions. This involvement supports communications that develop alongside Refr’s platform and its expanding customer base.
Developing commercial partnerships
Partnership development has focused on relationships relevant to officials and the organisations serving them. Our role connects Refr’s platform and audience with prospective partners whose offerings have a practical place in the officiating community.
The commercial emphasis is on mutual relevance: how a relationship supports Refr’s customers, introduces the platform to prospective users or strengthens its presence within officiating. Partnership discussions connect those interests with opportunities for distribution, customer engagement and continuing collaboration.
Progress through the seed stage
Refr has raised a $2 million seed round and, based on its current trajectory, is tracking towards $1 million in annual recurring revenue. These milestones reflect the combined contribution of Refr’s founders, product team and commercial organisation.
Wynand’s contribution has been sustained involvement in market positioning, marketing execution and partnership development during that progression. The relationship has supported the establishment of acquisition programmes and a continuing connection between Refr’s product development and commercial communications.
Our involvement continues as Refr expands adoption and develops its position in referee management and payments.
